brief history (no spoilers)

An older Sulgate native of elegance and unknown past, Rami Salaheem serves as the Head Keeper and second-in-command at the Scarab's Oasis bath house in Redford Village. He oversees hospitality there, while also entertaining guests and tending to Lord Samir Bashevar's business as his personal assistant and confidant. He is also known as House Bashevar's head alchemist. Rami's craft mostly focuses on poisons and other various intoxicating elixirs for the Bashevar trade, selling them to nobles and mundane villagers alike. These consumables are also used in his personal endeavors, specifically during combat.Tall and slender, while marked by sharp pewter eyes, gold jewelry, and a luxurious wardrobe, Rami is a rather polished figure, yet clearly very human in nature. His mannerisms are unfailingly courteous, though his charm typically carries a sly shrewdness to it, and the fervor of the man's Ranatoran faith has been known to surface without warning when he is pushed on the matter. While he is rarely seen with more than a simple dagger as a weapon, there is something about him that suggests he may be masking a sharper edge. One that hints at a blood-stained history of Sulgate holy war crimes and imprisonment that he will not openly share.Everything about the man - wealth, duties, and appearance - are by design to bear the stamp of House Bashevar's enterprise. He plays the role of confidant and paramour to Lord Samir, with rumors swirling that he is actually Samir's indentured servant.

- Rami's occupation at the Scarab's Oasis in Redford Village can be considered common knowledge to long-term locals. Seek him out for hospitality, entertainment, personalized intoxicants, or specialized alchemical consumables like poisons and potions. But keep in mind that he is still a businessman. Nothing is ever free, and everything comes at a price.
 
- Those native to the far Sulgate region about 100-50 years ago may recognize his surname 'Salaheem' as that of a powerful merchant family that once supplied Ranatoran zealots with weapons and munitions used against the Children of Sault combatants during holy wars. It may also be known that House Salaheem fell 30 years ago.


 
- He is always searching for fresh, interesting ingredients and components to craft potent elixirs. If you are a peddler of such things, he would be highly interested in your wares.
 
- Despite his position within House Bashevar, a known Children of Sault bloodline, Rami is still a sworn Ranatoran at heart and is occasionally prone to sudden, fervent religious outbursts and diatribes when his faith is pulled into question.

Rami oil paints as a hobby, and enjoys painting on the bodies of the bathhouse clients for fun. He learned to paint during hospitality training after he was aquired by House Bashevar. He is also known to infuse these particular body paints with illicit opioids to provoke euphoric effects.He keeps scorpions and breeds them. He uses their venom and toxins in his research to create prototype bio-weapons, mixing steel with deadly poisons. This study has likely been commissioned by House Bashevar. Sometimes Rami forces his enemies to consume live scorpions as a form of torture.Rami once engaged in excessive cannibalism during wartime, out of food desperation and as part of Ranator religious rituals. This is not something he still practices today, but will nostalgically indulge every now and then when presented with the opportunity.He is a proud man and thus highly self conscious about his subjugation. Rami will hide what he truly is at all costs, or become insulted or embarrassed if light is shed upon his lack of personal freedom.He has as an addiction to opioids, specifically Alfium. This was originally introduced to him after his freedom was purchased by Lord Samir, to keep him complacent. Since then he has become rather dependent on it.Before his parents' untimely death and the acceleration of the war, Rami grew up quite privileged, with a focus on education, but also combat. He was an only child, so his parents poured everything they had into his upbringing. Because of this he can read, write, understand more complicated sciences, and speak the two main languages of the region as well as his native tongue Trommrhun. Etiquette and culture was later introduced to him after joining House Bashevar.Rami once owned a beloved horse called Farasha. She was beheaded when he was taken prisoner during the holy wars in his youth. He has a soft spot for horses to this day.The old scarification marking on his chin was inflicted by his mother at an early age; the sigil of House Salaheem.Rami is never seen without a specific gilded collar around his neck, as well as various golden accessories. These treasures are not meant to express his own personal wealth, but rather a sign of ownership by House Bashevar. Rami and Samir’s relationship is a difficult and complicated one. He loves and hates the man, and those dueling, volatile emotions run deeper than one could understand.Rami keeps an alarming amount of venus flytraps and other carnivorous plants in his gardens; alchemy ingredients for poisons and potions.He has many body and facial piercings, a number of them often unseen in his standard attire. These are a common display of elegance and opulence worn by House Barshevar servants, but they also act as familiar touchpoints for Samir, due to his cecity.

Born in a secluded religious settlement on the outskirts of the Nuumalon region, Attacus grew up surrounded by strict doctrine and magical training from an early age. His natural talents in necromancy set him apart, though he also developed an affinity for chitinurgy and entomancy, specializing in insect-based magic.After many years of continued studies, he was sent on a pilgrimage to the Tokana settlement in the far northern lands of Honsu, to continue his studies and learn about artificing; the matrimony of magic and technology that the cult saw as a threat to the purity of the faith. However, once he was distanced from life in the sect, Attacus made the conscious decision to never return and instead he traveled in the exact opposite direction. He fled and ventured to Redford, in the hopes of pursuing his own personal goals, where he still resides today. He currently works and lives at a Seeker temple as a prelate and representative of the faith, as well as a mercenary mage and necromancer for hire during dungeon exploration and various paid jobs.Personality wise, Attacus is blunt, sarcastic, and abrasive, with little patience for inefficiency, though he is fiercely loyal to those who have earned his respect. Visually, he is an extremely svelte, haggard, and tall middle-aged human male with long, unkempt gray-white hair, pale, gaunt features and hollow black eyes. His only notable trait is the large and angry birthmark-like blemish that covers much of the left side of his face. His left eye remains perpetually closed, rumored to either be missing or terribly infected. His minimalistic wardrobe consist of dreary black robes and old, dusty tunics. During magical rituals and missions, he will wear more traditional attire that includes a hooded cloak and face chains. He will often tie back his hair during formal occasions. Attacus speaks with no notable accent and is fluent in both Ko-man and Aerliyu.His 'pet' centipede Algol is always with him, often tucked behind his ear or under his hair, even if it cannot be seen.

Attacus is always physically cold, due to his underweight stature and affinity with death and necromancy magic. He will seek out warmth to combat this unpleasantness via proximity to fire pits and furs and sometimes even other individuals.Despite his morose, abrasive and haughty personality, Attacus will tremble with fear and freeze up if he is thrust into dangerous situations, especially if it means he may be physically harmed. He carries no weapons for defence, which could be considered a trauma response to the ritualistic trial he was forced to partake in during his youth. He relies solely on his magical abilities for protection.Attacus is, at heart, an arcanist purist who believes technology and artificing has no place under the magical umbrella. This was a teaching of his dogmatic faith that he still holds true today.Ironically enough, he is a fan of sweets, and will go out of his way to purchase cakes or candies instead of a normal meal, even if it is lacking in nutrition.Since Attacus is a deserter of his religious sect, he is under constant stress and paranoia of those from his birth region of Nuumalon. It was not unheard of for high council members in his settlement to hunt down runaway renegades and drag them back to the compound for forced mental reconditioning.Performing magic takes a physical toll on his body, and his face is evidence of that. Necromancy eats away at his flesh (left facial features) and saps his strength, while Chitinurgy weakens his mental stability (formication and delirium).Back in the cult where he was raised, there were rumors that he and his brother were closer than mere twins and taboo accusations were once noted. This may have disgusted and encouraged the council to push the ritual fight forward, rather than reconsider and take a more merciful stance on the religion’s old laws.There was once a time when his hair was raven-black and silky, but constant magic use, stress and old age caused it to rapidly gray.

Ro'bel comes from a small shrouded hamlet along the boundaries of Orsburg in the far Kingdom of Grimgaud. He was born to an extremely large family with over a dozen siblings. The family business dabbled in the realm of healing, theurgy and mending magic. Naturally, Ro'bel was expected to continue with this tradition as an adult.He is a very secretive person and little is known about his history. When asked, he will express that he has temporarily relocated to Redford Village for work, however there are rumors that his village was seized by Dwarven warriors due to the ongoing conflict with the Underdark and he was forced to flee to this region to escape the conflict.When among large crowds, Ro'bel rarely shows his face, opting to wear hooded cloaks and masks that conceal most of his features. He does not speak with any quirks like other halflings tend to do. In fact, he bears a laid-back and sometimes humorless demeanor, which those of his kin are rarely known for. While he is a healer by trade, he is also a skilled and shrewd tactician during dungeon exploration and combat, opting to take cover in the back and strategize rather than jumping mindlessly to the frontlines. However, he tends to get easily overwhelmed when his plans do not go his way or turn chaotic. While his healing magic does not have any negative effects on him physically, it can backfire and take a toll on his mental state in the form of disassociation, anxiety, and panic - ironic weaknesses that directly undermine his tactician profession.

Born in Salem, Massachusetts, Taiga comes from a highly religious family of Christian televangelists and theologists. His bloodline and ancestry dates back to the Putnam family of the late 1600s, which were the significant accusers during the notorious Salem witch trials of the time. Following in his family's footsteps, he has traveled to the city of Howling Hills with the intentions of working at the church and hosting his dogmatic Sunday sermons there. He is quite interested in the occult, but holds a strong fear towards whatever his religion deems "evil," specifically demons and the undead.Oddly enough, Taiga possesses magical abilities himself, though he does not use them often. Besides his light magic, which he considers holy and a 'gift from God', Taiga regards most of his other magical skills as something corrupt and unholy, something that goes directly against his faith. He tends to pose as a normal human on most occasions.Visually, Taiga has short wheat-blond hair that is greying at the temples. His eyes are a gunmetal silvery tone and he has a lightly tanned olive complexion. He is a rather tall 6’4” and a fit, yet slender, 185 lbs. Taiga's fashion style consists mostly of classy and vintage suits with a 'dark academia' aesthetic. North Easterners might recognize his surname as a family who owns a televangelist 'Megachurch' corporation in Massachusetts.For a pastor, the man has an unusual amount of markings that decorate his physical form. He displays faded occult scarification upon his chin, chest, and back, along with an evil eye tattoo on his left ear and the Verdant Angel scar sigils on both his palms.Taiga attended Boston University in the big city where he received an undergraduate degree with a major in theology and a minor in classic literature. After his four year undergrad degree was finished, he remained at BU and completed a Master's degree in sacred theology and biblical studies at the school's Theology branch. Following graduation, he worked for his father at the megachurch corporation and temporarily took on the role as host for the company's Evangelist radio broadcast.Taiga experiences delusions and a false belief in his own power and importance. This is related to his religious views. It could be considered a mental illness, to some degree.As of January 2025, Taiga's blood is no longer the typical AB+. During a summoning ritual and soul exchange, it was blessed by the Verdant Angel and now smells and tastes of pine. She worked at the flower shop that provided the carnations and lilies used at his father's church. Aisha was Turkish and had immigrated to America when she was very young. She used to manipulate dangerous radioactive metalloids like uranium, radium, mercury and arsenic just for the fun of it. She could fill her arms and hands with electrical currents and release them on a whim. Aisha passed away from natural illness before she and Taiga could be wed.The old Nokia phone that Taiga still uses to this day was enchanted by Aisha as a gift.After Aisha's death, Taiga fell into deep depression. He began to stray from the path of light towards necromancy rituals and blood magic in the hopes of reviving her. Eventually, these failed attempts were discovered by his family. Horrified and disgusted, he was cast out from the church for bringing disgrace upon the bloodline for meddling in dark magic. This turn of events resulted in Taiga moving to Howling Hills to try and rebuild his life and work his way back into the good graces of his family.Taiga's younger brother Alvis is proficient in fire magic, and his younger estranged sister Tatiana uses water magic. He is the only one of his siblings that is skilled in both light and holy spellcasting.

Conspiracy theory enthusiast and self-proclaimed 'journalist,' Paul is a former NEET (not in Education, Employment, or Training) with little to offer to society. Internet edgelords and fellow basement-dweller incels may recognize his voice as the alias 'Inktooth,' who runs an amateur online conspiracy theory monologue podcast. This podcast mostly centers around covert government rabbit holes and aliens, sometimes with a focus on cryptids and other underground oddities. While his podcast is a large part of his identity, Paul is also a musician that dabbles in the SoundCloud rap and vaporwave genre. He is utterly human in every sense of the word.Very little is known about his past, only that he moved into Howling Hills a few months ago and rarely leaves his basement except to attend music events. He has a strong Southern accent and is originally from the decrepit and unveiled Appalachian town of Gaffney in South Carolina. While he keeps those details close to his chest, he watched his family succumb to a horde of Abberitions in his youth which most of his trauma and mental health issues stem from to this day.Despite his rather detached and strange demeanor, Paul is known to be generally friendly, albeit a bit annoying due to his Gen Z/Zoomer mannerisms. history

Born in Istanbul, Turkey, Theo Öztürk comes from a large family of architects and mathematicians, with a lineage dating back to Bulgaria on his mother’s side, as well as the Isidore of Miletus of the Byzantine Empire on his father’s side. For all their intellect, his father’s family fell from grace during the Ottoman Empire of the 16th century. Desperate to maintain their academic aristocracy status under the Sultan at the time, they succumbed to ritualistically consuming human brain matter in a bid to retain more intellect and increase their aptitude. It soon divulged into feasting upon the entire body, flesh and organs, of those they subjected to such a practice. Due to these egregious crimes against humanity and their own kind, the Öztürk family was cursed by a ghoul. It is a malediction that still exists within their bloodline to this day. The curse turned the lineage to Ghilans: Cryptid-like creatures akin to the Wendigo that are specific to the Mediterranean region. Theo is no exception and suffers from the same affliction as the rest of his kin on his father’s side of the family.Because of this affliction, Theo grapples with a variety of mental struggles. Unlike shifters and those with lycanthropy who are often told to embrace their true nature, he was raised to be ashamed; to hide it and to repent the mutation. Despite the guilt, he must still adhere to his genetics: To maintain a carnivore - specifically a cannibalistic - diet, which makes life quite challenging. He works in a similar field to the rest of his family as an architect at a menial 9-5 job, which makes him miserable and depressed. However, his true passion lies in fine arts. He is a skilled drawer and painter, and tends to express himself through these somewhat unsettling paintings. Sometimes he believes his paintings can tell the future.Theo moved to Howling Hills to work and live, but also in the hopes of finding a remedy for his family's mutation here. He heard rumors of a group founded by Henry Miller that works to find a cure for Corruption. While Theo is not technically Corrupt, per say, he considered his genetics cursed and no better than an Aberration.

Can souls be created? A curious question. One that may tantalize the minds of those considering George's origins. The creature was originally constructed by blending Eldritch sorcery with the extracted eye of a slayed dragon, a Longan ivy plant, and plenty of water, meat, loam and soil. The old dragon's eye, when removed from its host, was kept and used as an artifact; An eldritch phylactery, of sorts. It was buried in the garden and took root within the soil. The eye was tended to by its owners, growing in silence in a flourishing garden on a back porch, years slowly inching along. It was only when the slayer of the dragon had their contractual bond broken that the eye was freed. No longer used as a binding fragment for the Eldritch, a soul began to blossom and sentience began to develop. A glorious evolution took place, allowing George to gain awareness and construct a humanoid form of his own, one day extracting himself from the soil where he had grown.In his natural state, George appears as a monstrous creature made of roots and plantmatter. He has no head, instead simply possessing a massive Stapelia Gigantea flower with the dragon's eye at the center that acts as his cranium. There is a maw at the center of his chest, typically decorated in fungi and leaves, where he ingests nutrients. While he has arms, George typically uses plant tendrils and feelers that blossom from his chest cavity and crown to examine his surroundings. He is mute and cannot communicate in any normal or natural way. He is capable of communicating telepathically with someone, but only after engaging in a consenting, parasitical ritual. George can appear human when he wishes, but it is only a visual illusion. He will act no different while using this mirage, typically only utilizing it when around strangers or in uncomfortable situations. While George was created from a dragon's remains, he is not the same being. He does not harbor the memories of the dragon and is considered a new, unique soul that is all his own.Despite his grotesque appearance (and dietary requirement of meat and ichor), George is considered polite, lighthearted, kind and thoughtful. He is very emotional and empathetic towards others, and is both curious and enthusiastic about experiencing human life while grappling with the overwhelming newfound sentience. Because of his 'newness' to life, he is naive, but also protective of and codependent on those that tended to him before his evolution. He must root himself in soil to recover from any form of injuries, or to obtain proper rest. He is deeply connected to the natural world on a level he does not even fully understand yet.

Little is publicly known about Bassel before his arrival in Oulbury. One day he simply appeared, after having taken the ferry on the night of the jazz concert at the bar. He has been frustratingly trapped on the island ever since.He is often seen exploring the city with an air of intrigue and restrained curiosity, taking notes about the people he meets and the strange occurrences he witnesses in a little black moleskine notebook he keeps on him at all times. The notes he writes are in Arabic, but if questioned he would say he is collecting ideas for an upcoming theatrical performance he is directing. He says that this performance is the reason why he journeyed to this city in the first place: In search of a muse to cure a bout of stubborn and persistent writer’s block that has plagued him for the past few years. Besides this common knowledge, the man remains a mystery.Bassel has a deep skin tone, one evident of his heritage, with dark hair and deep, somber eyes. He is tall with a slender yet athletic build, and has very few notable characteristics about him besides some obscure white ink tattoos on his fingers and hands. His style could be described as clean cut modern and minimalistic, often sporting neutral tones, muted reds, and monochromatic colorschemes. He prefers to wear formal attire, but maintaining that aesthetic has proven difficult trapped on the island.Carrying himself with a sort of antiquated elegance, Bassel comes across as polite, charming and well-spoken to most everyone he meets. He is not necessarily afraid of his new circumstances on the island, but rather, he appears playfully disoriented and confused by the unusual ongoings at Oulbury. That is the demeanor he presents to others and what he allows the world to see. He is a trained actor, after all.

Born in Oran, Algeria during the height of the French colonial conquest, Bassel's early memories were plagued with bloodshed and war. His father was an Algerian nationalist who fought for the county's independence, while his mother was originally a 'Pieds-Noir' early French colonizer who turned sympathizer. During his teenage years and into his late 20s, Bassel followed in his father's footsteps and became a freedom fighter who engaged in guerilla warfare against the French colonization and genocide at the height of the Pacification of Algeria. When his parents were killed during a raid on their home, and with nothing else to lose, he fully devoted himself to the cause.He was tasked with seizing and slaying a French operative, but failed when, much to his horror, this agent turned out to be... not so human. This soldier was no soldier at all, but rather a minor minion of the eldritch horror Yog-Sothoth, wreaking havoc on Earth in search of a human vessel.Instead of killing Bassel, eldritch claimed his body to use as a new host. It was a fate worse than death. Confused and horrified, Bassel’s true cognizance slipped deep into the recesses of his mind, now controlled by this new entity, while the acolyte of Yog-Sothoth used him as a puppet to do what it wished. The creature proceeded to murder and feast upon any human it stumbled upon, both French and Algerian soldiers alike, to satiate his thirst, all while using Bassel’s body like a marionette.The next few decades were a blur. This new ‘Bassel’ had no intention of returning to his comrades to fight alongside them in the Algerian War. Instead, he moved nightly from village to village, witnessing the massacre of the war. Eventually he took refuge in Morocco, which was still occupied by Vichy France at the time. In 1942, Allied forces liberated Morocco from Vichy control and turned it into a critical Allied base. The country became an active participant in Allied operations. Bassel enlisted as a soldier in the Moroccan Goumier within the French Army of Africa. Not to fight alongside the Allies, but to learn about humans and their peculiar penchant for violence and war.When the war came to an end in 1945, Bassel was aimless once again. He found himself in Croatia and bore witness to the establishment of Tito's Communist Partisan one-party state and Stalinism in the country. During the following decades, Bassel embarked on a mission to search for his master Yog-Sothoth. Unfortunately this pursuit proved unsuccessful.In the 70s, Bassel began to pursue some hobbies, mostly acting and the performing arts at various theater companies across Southeast Europe and the Balkans. This hobby eventually turned into a career, with Bassel writing and directing several acclaimed dramas in the region.In the early 2000s he moved to America. He became a recluse, working as a ghostwriting playwright, moving from one modern metropolis to another to work, but also to continue his futile search for his master. It was only when he felt a sudden pull one day, towards a little unknown island a short ferry trip over the deep oceans, that he knew he was close. That a path towards Yog-Sothoth was near. The eldritch presence on the island was palpable. This would be his new home.Now at the present located in Oulbury, he feels closer to his true objective as he ever has. He continues to pose as a playwright while in search of his muse, yet his true mission remains the hunt to return to Yog-Sothoth’s side.

Ponzu is an intrepid marionette-type Crafted/Peculiar puppet hybrid. He was originally created by an unknown Peculiar inventor and engineer in Cape Town, and was later relocated to Howling Hills. He was meant to be the physical (and metaphysical) personification of his creator's lost hopes and dreams, but wound up alone and corrupted by Aberration curse and decay.Ponzu utilizes a type of FeelSoft™ material to replicate real human skin and hair, but he has no blood flow, pulse or organic organs. His internal mechanisms consist of spell-bound ropes, strings, wood, metal and a high-level Aberration core that all work simultaneously to keep him functional. He is ball-jointed. Cognitively, he was imprinted on by the souls of his creator's two adult twin children, both who became corrupted due to magic overextension and died. The souls themselves were contaminated by corruption, leading Ponzu to sympathize with the Aberration's plight and dwell down a path of moral depravity. While Ponzu bears a shadow of the twins’ compassionate and enthusiastic demeanor, his temperament is now often deceptive, capricious, unstable, or even violent. He is also prone to potential self-deprecation.Ponzu does not possess any particularly powerful physical abilities despite being Crafted, however he is capable of tapping into the enchantment that keeps him operating, specifically through soul-weaving cerebral magic such as hypnotism and mind control. He is also skilled with handling short blades and contortionism when faced with melee combat. Visually, Ponzu has a fair and lightly freckled complexion. He is tall, 6’4”, and extremely heavy, over 300 lbs, due to the weighty metal armature framework that constructs him. He has heterochromia that is represented in one orange and one green eye. These eyes turn a helical red when enraged, injured or enthralled. His hair is jet black and often slicked back with cheap pomade.He was originally made to resemble a conventionally attractive human, but the corrupted twin souls he houses has slowly decayed his appearance over time, giving him sallow, pallid skin, sunken eyes, oily hair and rotting, crooked teeth. A staunch Imperialist, Aer Arnad loyalist, and supporter of the spurned Imperial Trade, Prehevil is an eccentric Harvest elf of House Pior. He wields skill with a bow, taking up archery and marksmanship at a young age and carrying those talents into his professional adult years despite being raised with immense privilege in the luxurious settlement of Imlethaes. An Aer Arnad town famed for its opulence, his parents were merchants who ran a trinket and toy shop in the heart of Imlethaes. This charming storefront acted as the perfect tourist trap for all of the Empire's noble families during their glamorous summer retreats. Preh grew up watching his parents bend the knee and suck up to the nobles and High Elves of the region, a conviction still engraved in him to this day.While Preh had little interest in working at the shop or continuing his parent's trade, he took the time to learn the artisan craft of woodworking and toymaking from his mother. To this day, he will occasionally construct and carve small dolls, totems and puppets, either to soothe anxiety or as gifts for new friends, loved ones... or enemies. Sometimes he will selectively stuff these folksy tomes with homegrown hexes or good luck charms, depending on the recipient. Though he often uses his woodworking skills more practically by crafting his own arrows and maintaining his longbow.Beyond his family's trade and birthplace, little is known about the elf's past. While Prehevil bears the shadow of a demeanor typical for a respectable Harvest elf, his temperament is often regarded as capricious, manic, and even mentally unstable at times. He is also prone to bouts of anxiety and nihilism. Visually, Prehevil has a fair complexion, a slender and nimble build, and jet black hair that is often slicked back with expensive pomade. At times he will temporarily allow his hair to grow out to his shoulders during manic episodes. His bright, ethereal azure eyes and gapped-toothed Cheshire grin are his most distinguishing features.Before combat, Preh observes a curious custom: He binds his entire head with woven cotton strips of fabric, leaving only his single left eye and mouth visible. This ritual is meant to heighten his concentration and increase the precision of his arrow, channeling his sole focus to land what he calls an ‘Eagle-Eye Shot’. As a younger man, his intimidating and eerie battle garb was striking enough to earn him the nickname 'The Veiled Falcon' in the northwestern reaches of Aer Arnad.Prehevil has a pet kestrel named Ponzu. This small yet fierce bird of prey is carried in his side pouch pocket and is used to deliver messages to comrades and scout ahead when out in the wilds.
